Common Errors You May Face with Google Maps

Having trouble with your Google Maps widget? Errors like 'Oops! Something went wrong' or 'This page can't load Google Maps correctly' can happen, but don’t worry – this guide will help you fix them easily, no technical skills required!

Troubleshooting steps

1. Check Developer Console for Errors

The Developer Console is a built-in browser tool that shows technical messages. If your map isn’t loading, Google will display errors in the console, helping you identify the exact cause.

To open the console, simply press Ctrl + Shift + J (Cmd + Option + J on Mac) in most browsers. Here’s an example of what it looks like:

For more detailed instructions on how to open the console, check out this article: How to Take a Screenshot of the Developer Console.

2. Fix the Specific Error You See

Here are some common errors you might encounter in the console or widget editor:

Let’s go through each error and see how to resolve it.

Billing Not Enabled

To connect your map, you need an API key — a digital key that allows the map to load on your site. One of the required setup steps is enabling billing.

If billing isn’t enabled, your map won’t load, and you'll see a BillingNotEnabledMapError in the console:

You’ll also see the message “This page can’t load Google Maps correctly” or “For development purposes only” in the widget:

To fix this, enable billing for your API key. You can find detailed instructions in our guide: Step 1 – Enable Billing for your Google Maps widget.

Referrer Not Allowed

Your API key is restricted to specific website addresses called referrers. If the site where your widget is installed isn’t listed correctly, the map won’t load.

In the console, you’ll find the RefererNotAllowedMapError error:

You’ll also see the message “Oops! Something went wrong” in the widget:

To resolve this, add the correct website domains to your API key restrictions. For detailed steps on how to add referrers, check out our guide: Step 2 – Restrict API Key for your Google Maps widget.

API Not Activated

Google Maps requires enabling specific APIs — tools that allow your website to use various map features. If these aren’t turned on, the map won't work, and you may see the 'Oops! Something went wrong' error in the widget.

In the console, this issue appears as ApiNotActivatedMapError:

To resolve this, activate the following APIs in your Google project:

For setup and activation instructions, please refer to this guide: Step 2 – Enable required APIs for your Google Maps widget.

Request_Denied

Your API key has a free monthly quota of 10,000 geocoding requests, which are used to convert addresses into coordinates.

Once the limit is reached, additional requests will be blocked, and you may see the Request_Denied error when adding locations in the widget editor:

To fix it, enable billing in your Google account so that any requests beyond the free quota are covered. For more information, check out Google’s guide: Geocoding API Usage and Billing.

Pro Tip: Instead of using addresses, add locations by coordinates. This reduces geocoding requests, helping you stay within the free quota.
